Woops, too late. I have a friend who worked on US government autonomous killer robot development from about 2002 to 2010.
He once told me our civilian government basically wants killer robots because humans will sometimes disobey orders they consider immoral. But the armed forces commanders don’t trust the robots not to commit atrocities. So the robot vendors make them all remotely controllable, so that armed forces can set them up so a soldier has to first confirm the kill the robot wants to make. And the soldier always does, even if the robot is wrong.
EDIT: in case it wasn’t obvious from context, all the above is hearsay, except for the part about the arms race of murderbots already being well advanced.
