What did we do to deserve dogs?

Dogs are distilled love.

By Lord Byron:

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.

This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
Boatswain, a Dog
who was born in Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead Nov. 18th, 1808

When some proud Son of Man returns to Earth,
Unknown to Glory, but upheld by Birth,
The sculptor’s art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And storied urns record who rests below.
When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Master’s own,
Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonoured falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the Soul he held on earth –
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.

Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power –
Who knows thee well, must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy tongue hypocrisy, thy heart deceit!
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye, who behold perchance this simple urn,
Pass on – it honours none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend’s remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one – and here he lies

Cats are selfish, only slightly social, andnot all that bright. The only reason we keep them is that they are highly adapted little killing machines.

Dogs are loyal, social, very intelligent, and can be trained to do everything from herd to hunt to guard to guide. I say this as someone with both dogs and cats

We absolutely don’t deserve dogs, not even a lil’ bit

Wellll; cats are bit more social than people give them credit for, and I do believe they love us, in their way, but it could just be that they have learned that it benefits them to be around us.
Anyone who’s had a female cat in labour knows that they want their human with them while they give birth. Honest affection and real bonds? Or self interested manipulation?

If you were to kick a dog, and you saw the dog a month later he might remember you and bite you. Unlike a cat that would have spent a portion of each of the intervening 43,000 minutes plotting revenge… No value judgement, just an observation.

I was going to propose the cat from accelerando as a counter example. but cstross is clear on this point:

Yeah from a purely utilitarian point of view it’s no contest.

Cats:

  • Kill vermin

Dogs:

  • Kill vermin
  • Assist with hunting all manner of game animals
  • Private security guards (protecting against human and animal threats alike)
  • Serve with police and military
  • Inspect airports and ports of entry for contraband
  • Perform search and rescue operations
  • Corral herd animals
  • Pull sleds across snow-covered terrain
  • Provide critical assistance to people with disabilities
  • Bring you fucking booze when you’re freezing to death in the Alps

Got 'em both, Love em both. Couldn’t give a shit which one is more intelligent by what ever kind of human measure you might want to use. Ask your average cat who gives a rats ass about the intelligence test. For that matter ask a cat who’s a good boy. Hands down a cat runs his/her own show and if you don’t like it feel free to hack up a hair ball.

Cats do try to do this. It’s just that humans don’t find small animals as nourishing as other cats do.
