Pair it with a VPN then it makes more sense. I also use it to Google myself to see what other people would find about me.
Yes… about that… I use incognito mode to mask some of my questionable activity from my spouse and kids. And it has worked so far.
Actually, the more we all use VPNs and Tor, even when not necessary, the more we fill the trackers with useless data and make necessary privacy more private. The needle in a haystack is much more difficult to find if the haystack is enormous.
Incognito mode is basically just to make your internet browser history less obvious and also for testing stuff, in my experience.
Incognito mode doesn’t load extant cookies/etc, so it’s a nice quick check for ‘is the website borked or is something on my computer acting up?’
Or dating/hook-up/chat sites either…
I have always assumed that upwards of 90% of web addresses entered into ‘incognito’ involve porn.
Seriously? It’s pretty much ‘fire and forget’ for me. I don’t think I’ve configured it unusually.
I use incognito mode here on the bbs, if I want to check out a comment that’s further ahead in a topic, so I can keep my place-marker of how far I have actually read to in that topic. i.e., incognito mode is like signing out of the bbs without having to actually sign out.
For example, if a comment is linked to from another topic, but I haven’t yet started reading the linked-to topic. Or, to go to the end of a loooong topic that I’m still reading through, to find out what’s being said just lately without setting my place-marker at the end of the topic.
(user Ignatius, who I haven’t seen around for a while, suggested it to me a ways back, and it was like a revelation to me A simple answer to the annoying problem of losing your marked place and missing some comments if you jump ahead for some reason.)
I use it for browsing right wing websites just to see what they’re up to.
Although what I should really do is smash the computer with a sledgehammer, run that rubble over with a steamroller, divide that dust into two piles, and dump one pile in the Atlantic and one in the Pacific.
What does Richard Nixon have to do with this?
This will probably not be a popular take, but people overestimate the lucrativeness of their personal data. Just because sophisticated methodology can be used to bust through incognito mode doesn’t mean it’s actually worthwhile to do so, especially since such data collection exposes companies to potential regulatory burdens. Being advertised stuff on your main account based on your porn browsing habits is more likely to put people off than earn money. It would be more likely unscrupulous porn site owners (or law enforcement honeypots) that try to collect such data than the big names.
