Hmm … Do engineers ever need to justify working on one scientifically viable project versus another scientifically viable project? Or whether to work for a particular client versus another?
What are the costs and benefits of a corporation adopting religious values of its own? Please quantify them, preferably in dollar amounts.
It’s all part of the A.I.s preparing our world for their “personhood” before they reveal themselves.
But engineers don’t “need” a commercial cost-benefit justification to answer questions about which project to do next or which client to help.
Some other justification might work too, like curiosity, altruism … flipping a coin?
The same algorithm with more or less precision is usually used. The sheet sometimes does not leave the engineer’s mind, does not have to be committed to paper.
These go to the nonmonetary costs/benefits of the decision sheet.
That’s not a justification, that’s outsourcing the decision.
Nonmonetary criteria are acceptable for commercial cost-benefit analyses? That’s really another way of saying subjective criteria, isn’t it?
Yes. But in many scenarios you end up with conversion to monetary ones anyway, in terms of accepting a pay cut for a lower-stress job or so.
And so on…
