That is…very much not true. What Newton did was oversee recoinage, standardise exchange values with foreign currencies and prosecute counterfeiters and clippers. The concept of coinage and the theoretical principles behind it had been known and talked about for literal millennia by that point.

the milled edges and standardized coin sizes invented by newton, so far as i understand, allowed people to trust the coin for the coin rather than for it’s composition. while it didn’t happen the same moment, that allowed the monarchy to reduce the amount of pure silver (and gold?) in the coins while keeping the same value
