Ayup. I worked at the Barnes & Nobles catty-cornered from the Borders here…Borders was a joke. Shelves with empty spaces in them, stock carelessly flung about, barely anyone on the floor. I’d moved on from B&N by the time the Borders closed. Then, a month later…so did the Barnes and Noble. I yelled at the TV when I saw the news. "You morons! You’d won! "
The hilarious part was the local news VoxPop bit with some Area Woman lamenting the loss of “character” on State Street, while looking very much like the same sort of person who would’ve gnashed their teeth at the chain bookstores moving in a decade or so earlier.
End result? No bookstores at all on the main commercial drag in town.
