Why Harper's "Letter on Justice and Open Debate" is dumb

When the letter obliquely refers to authors being chastised for inauthenticity- this is what I hear.

The author who pretended to be a trans woman.

“ Albert, Feuerzeig, and “JT LeRoy” contribute to the oppression that queer people suffer, reducing them to the most pathetic stereotypes. They make a mockery out of the travails of queer life yet still want to be pitied and envied as if their pretense was legitimate. More people than “the transgender community” should be enraged by this doc. It is a drag in the old-fashioned sense.”

Who is being silenced and harmed?

Not anyone who signed that letter, obviously.

I frikkin can’t STAND arbiters. Of anything!

Agreed. Bad ideas should be vigorously dissected with no gloves and no pain suppression.

That would depend on your opinion of anatomists.

I ask again, who are the silenced and who are doing the silencing?

“New York (CNN Business)Editor’s note: This article quotes racist, homophobic and sexist language, much of which has not been censored.

The top writer for Fox News host Tucker Carlson has for years been using a pseudonym to post bigoted remarks on an online forum that is a hotbed for racist, sexist, and other offensive content, CNN Business learned this week.“

But remember- criticism of transphobia is beyond the pale!

He concentrates on the loud obvious examples, but doesn’t mention the quiet cancel culture where if the major media outlets are all owned by old rich white guys, there will be some viewpoints that will always be off the table.

Exactly! Let’s do this…

I mean, shouldn’t not holding ACTIVE racists, misogynist, homophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic, antisemitic beliefs be a baseline for being charge of a news room, FFS? How is this difficult, people?

In the situation described with the type of platitudes in the video, there will be an open letter addressing this one in a major publication any day now. Since that is not going to happen, it’s a fantasy to not address the realities of structural power on speech.
