i recall the trailer when i went to another film around the same time and i turned to a friend with me and said-- “that looks awful. how did they get kaufman to do that?” but when we realized that they had bernadette peters, randy quaid, and even jerry garcia we wondered whether the studio was using blackmail.
i don’t know if anyone remembers it but kaufman apologized for the movie on late night with david letterman and offered to refund the money of everyone that saw it out of his own pocket.
