Definitely seems like a good reason to use solid silicone rather than open weave cloth, at least on the side facing the hot surface.
If the hands are dry, it works just fine. I’ve noticed that there is a variant of the ove glove that’s designed specifically for steam protection. I don’t know why that isn’t their standard product.
