Was there really much beaver consumption? I thought it was mostly exctinct in Europe.
But on another note, I will add that Queen Elizabeth ruled that fish should be eaten on other days of the week. This would mean saltwater fish, since fresh water fish in lakes and rivers typically belonged to the nobility that owned the land. Elizabeth’s idea was to encourage the fishing industry and thereby build up the number of skilled sailors which could be used in the Navy.
