Oddly enough, I picked the username for a different site ages ago when it prompted me to sign up to post a comment. I forget what the site was, which is not surprising because it was such a piddly little thing that my first thought was, “why should I bother?” (Back then, that was the online equivalent of a checkout clerk at a Scotch Boutique* asking “would you like to join our rewards club?” before she takes your money)
Since then, I’ve used it a few places. (And, given that it’s sometimes taken, I have to assume others have had that exact same moment of low-grade contempt.) But it works. Any other social commentary is entirely accidental.
*And yes, Scotch Boutique is still my go-to reference for any impossibly-narrow business.
