The very definition of any “AI” site claiming to provide news is that at best, it’s an engine that scrapes from sites with actual journalists, and at worst, scrapes from sites that don’t.

This has got to be the most frustrating, dispiriting story I’ve read on the usage of A.I. in at least the last few months:

California teachers are using AI to grade papers. Who’s grading the AI?

Teachers interviewed for this story were straight-up and shamelessly admitting that they aren’t even reading the feedback that the A.I. is giving to their students. Some of them seem perfectly content to hand over their whole jobs to the software in the name of productivity.

Roberts feels Writable is “very accurate” when grading her students of average aptitude. But, she said, there’s a downside: It sometimes assigns high-performing students lower grades than merited and struggling students higher grades. She said she routinely checks answers when the AI grades assignments, but only checks the feedback it gives students occasionally.

“In actual practicality, I do not look at the feedback it gives every single student,” she said. “That’s just not a great use of my time."

When even experienced teachers like this one don’t think that even looking at the feedback that their students are getting is worth their time, I don’t know what to say. Feels like a huge chunk of society is perfectly happy to just pack it all in and let the machines do everything from this point forward.

Why grade anyone or anything? Just average it out. It’ll be grand.

They’re right. No point reading the feedback either.

Actually I mean that because you should never be required to read anything that nobody could have been bothered to write. Yes, I do rudely interrupt any event when someone says “I asked chat GPT and it said…”

I clicked through on this article posted in Metawatch and wanted to share an excerpt here,

An avid Go player and fan, Zhang learned about the potential of AI eight years ago, when Google’s AlphaGo system defeated Lee Sedol, one of the best players in the world.

“We will never have the same experience as pre-AlphaGo,” Zhang said. “The beauty and the mystery of Go was that you wanted to see how far and how interesting a human’s play could be. Now, the highest achievement would be if you can defeat an AI.”

But what’s more depressing is that in a recent interview with Google, Sedol said that he might not have become a professional Go player if AlphaGo had existed in his youth.

In a blog post, Zhang explained, “Lee Sedol made so much of Go history and was an icon of our time, a role model for me. So to see him say that if he were to choose again, he wouldn’t become a pro—because of AI. Words can’t adequately describe how heartbroken I feel to hear this.”
