These digital currencies only need encryption because the anonymity condition means none of the legal protection which your shares enjoy. Since lots of powerful people also own shares, yours are likely to remain legally quite safe as well!
I donāt know, but Iād say no? The difference is that bitcoins are being touted as a currencyāan alternative to our current system of fiat money, and shares in a company are not. Shares are ownership in a company (as Iām sure you know). Plus there is a whole regime of regulation around shares. Iād say they are a horse of a different color. Is bitcoin the same as a share in a company?
Iād say shares in a company are only as secure as the company in which youāre invested. What stops someone from claiming your shares is government regulation and the government providing the legal framework to protect your assets. Presumably you have documentation backing up what you own, and can take it to a court of law given such a situation.
Without exchange fees and reporting requirements, company shares would be a lot more liquid and make a pretty good currency. A system like bitcoin might actually make a lot of sense for digital shares.
