I wonder if political ads have much effect on voters? The biggest effect I suppose would be one of exclusion; with only the big arseholes being able to afford the high profile campaigns. Does America not have something like the Party Political Broadcasts over here in the UK? Where the state broadcasts one advert per party.

Yes they really do. It’s not the only deciding factor, but it makes a big difference.
Also, public funding is available, but the strings attached are onerous. In short, it costs a lot more to accept public money than to reject it.
