Very rare might be an exaggeration. 10% of Europeans have the mutation: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/03/050325234239.htm
The connection with Black Death is also fascinating.
Wait, 10% of Europeans are immune to HIV? How have I not heard of this before?
What sad news.
Although I conceptually understand the phenomenon of survivor’s guilt, it just seems so obviously irrational to me that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like to suffer from it. I dealt with both depression and anger issues early in my life, and I understand what it is to be locked in a negative mindset, but at the same time this is just beyond my capacity to fully understand. I guess I’ve just been lucky enough to have never been pushed to the point where I couldn’t turn back.
