And if you liked that and enjoy reading fiction, the Edward Rutherfurd book "London" covers most of that time frame (mid-1980s, if my memory recalls correctly). Be advised, it's not a short book.

As cheezball as its production is, the TV show Strip the City is surprisingly entertaining and educational and basically does this in reverse, but on a city scale. Youtube has a bunch of full eps.
