David B. always guarantees all-around weirdness. His problem used to be his lynchesque instincts of starting something he didn’t know how to finish; I haven’t read anything by him in recent years, hopefully he’s improved on that.
An antidote for your five-year-old might be the similar but less grim “How I Became a Pirate” and “Pirates Don’t Change Diapers” by Melinda Long and David Shannon. They are charming, with wonderful illustrations.
Those are two of my kids’ favorites. The synopsis for this comic sounds like a mashup between “How I Became a Pirate” and Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book.”
