I visited Venice in September, thought it was an thoroughly cool place to visit, and just want to add one thing here.
Do you see that square island to the north?
It is a GIANT. WALLED. CEMETERY.
There are docks outside the wall, adjacent to gates which close at night. One of these is for the water bus (vaporetto) service. As soon as I saw that it struck me how incredibly freaky it would be to miss the last boat and get stuck out on that dock all night. Especially on the night that the zombies begin to push their way out of their graves.
