So does it shift perspective to side-by-side or does one player have to play backward (character facing the screen)?

It’s not really a true vs mode, it’s a left over debugging tool.

You can use a key combo to get to a level/opponent select screen, from there you can use a different key combo when selecting a opponent to allow the second controller to control the opponent, replacing the normal AI with player input. The second controller still triggers the normal move set of the selected opponent, which tend to have much larger tells and wind up than the player character. This doesn’t really result in a very fair vs mode.

This was probably a huge help in debugging how player and opponent moves interacted, but doesn’t sound like more than a novelty for playing the game. I think the far cooler story was just that something like this was found so long after the release.

Seems like a good place to drop this video about the first easter egg in a video game. No, it’s not Adventure The True First Easter Egg: Ready Player One Was Wrong | Hardboiled History (Its Not Atari Adventure) - YouTube

Getting off topic but:

OK, I like this channel. Their video describing Metroid’s influences is pretty rocking.
