It’s not really gambling if the advisory groups are saying it’s the right thing to do (which the JCVI were). They just chose to follow the advice because it happened to be politically expedient to do so. They should be praised for following good advice, and I see no reason to withdraw that.

But the “gamble” (which it wasn’t really) did pay off. Deaths have been flatlined at nearly zero since the beginning of May, completely disconnected from cases, which is what you’d expect if you have a robust vaccination campaign where (1) the vaccinations are more effective at preventing death than preventing infection, and (2) you successfully vaccinated the vast majority of the high-risk people.
