He’s survived worse.

Seriously, though, I adore McKellen and hope he’s all right.

Holy shit, he was doing a stage fight at 85? I hope I’m in such good shape when I’m… actually I wish I was in that kind of shape now.

I hope he didn’t break a leg.

And while wearing a bit of padding.

First of all, it pisses me off that no one in the front row was quick-thinking enough to sacrifice themselves and catch him. What’s wrong with people? Shame on 'em. I hope he’s okay.

Second: has anybody seen it? I’m wondering if it’s adapted to all take place in, what I assume from the photo is, the Boar’s Head … Diner? Looks fun. Would love to hear McKellen’s version of Falstaff’s “Honor” speech. (Also, Jimoh is an inspired choice for Hal, but they couldn’t find a middle-aged black actor to play Henry IV? Seems weird.)

“Darkness took me. And I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled overhead, and every day was as long as the life age of the earth. But the show must go on!”

—McKellen, returning to work the following week as Ian the White

He’s in pretty good shape for someone who is about 11,000 years old.

Must be all that pipe weed.

I can’t believe I’d forgotten this until now but around the time that Fellowship came out I saw a brief interview with McKellen in which he was asked if he enjoyed making the LOTR films. He said something like, “I’m having as much fun as anyone not named Elijah Wood could have.”

I had the privilege of being involved in a Broadway play he starred in many years ago. I was impressed at the athleticism he displayed in treading the boards in padding for 2+ hours, and am even more impressed now.

That doesn’t look like Ian McKellen to me.
