Adding pink seaweed to cow feed eliminates their methane emissions

I know I could use something, and Beano doesn’t cut it.

Maybe this is something that will be useful for dairy?

I am assuming that “consuming less of everything” means that you are not including alcohol products…as this is nonnegotiable…hic…

I’m sure it means ‘stuff I don’t like’…and soybeans, pot and coffee get a pass.

Seaweed is also fairly well effed by climate change, thus different species would need to be farmed:

So, we discover this just before we destroy the oceans and make it impossible for pink seaweed to grow. Typical.

Well, I don’t think anyone read this and thought “Oh, well, we were going to deal with energy and pollution issues with livestock, but now with this, we don’t have to!”. Meat alternatives and consumer preferences aren’t going to change overnight. If we can reduce emissions in the interim, then I strongly support said effort, and would actively seek out beef fed this diet, and recommend it to others as well.

Anyone got any data on the environmental impact of booze production?

My first guess would be that it’s not too bad, but I’m prepared for an immiserating revelation.

I think the fastest way to get farmers to incorporate seaweed into cattle feed is to prove that less gassy cows are happier because happier cows tend to produce better quality milk and meat (why do you think many dairy farmers are willing to give cows water beds, butt scratchers and sounds systems that play classical music?).

While true, I am still sure that anyone who had a barn go ‘boom’ because of cow methane (it happens) would be interested in this.

Last time I saw this mentioned on reddit, a biologist came in and left a long explanation to say that a seaweed additive is still not an implementable solution.

The cows’ stomach biome, over time, somehow “adapts” to the seaweed consumption and the methane output rises to previous levels.

How much carbon dioxide will be produced by farming, processing, and shipping the seaweed to cattle farmers so we feel a little less guilty eating beef?

To be sure, methane is an odorless gas, and the sulfurous compounds responsible for the scent of intestinal wastes actually make up a very small percentage of the gases involved.

I remember some stories like that.

Amazon is burning exactly because of illegal farmers vying for using ever expanding land to plant soy to feed cows. Not the soy nor the meat stay here, by the way. This is all marked for exportation.

Although people worldwide are getting more and more on the vegan bandwagon, the turning point is far from here - and let’s get real, while cattle farming stays lucrative assholes will keep raising livestock. The only way to make them care is making NOT burning reserves and native land more lucrative.

This is bad, this is really bad and people don’t get the scope: these arsonists made a fire that is burning in 3 countries, there’s people going to hospitals in droves (children and elderly people are the majority of cases with respiratory issues flooding the ER), there are already cases where people could not leave their houses in time and they died, animals are also dying or running in fear, natives are being attacked and murdered.

You can talk with city people to not eat meat, what I want to see is anyone making a rancher with bloody hands and a torch talked out of keeping doing this.

How much do you use for a pot of pinto beans? If I can get this at the feed store, it should be cheaper than Beano. Little Mexico here may want to import plenty.
