This is a wonderful thing; though it is a shame that it has taken so long. #fuckronaldreagan
Also a shame that the treatment is so extreme and dangerous that it’s only worthwhile for patients who are otherwise likely to die of a blood cancer before the HIV gets them. Still, an important step in the right direction! Especially if they get the modified stem cell treatment to work.
Sidenote: thank you for the Umlaut.
Also, cancer is an arsehole, and HIV can just go unfuck itself.
Damn, no sex in the streets yet?
The other way to look at this is that HIV is a much more manageable disease than it was in the 80s and 90s (at least if you live in the US and are in a secure enough situation to have access to and ability to follow the treatment protocols). If AIDS were still the death sentence it was then, people would be lining up for a bone marrow transplant despite the risks.
Absolutely, “we can keep you alive long enough that you’ll probably die of something else” is no small feat for HIV (or for any previously fatal condition, really).
