I checked here: Statistiques | Banque de France
The average APR in France for consumer credit below 3000€ is 15,90%, anything above 21,20% is illegal. For larger sums, the average and maximum are lower. Mortgages are even lower.
Apple’s credit card sounds… fine (but expensive and not that compelling). I recently switched from First Direct (one of the first ‘virtual’ banks in the UK) to Starling Bank, which really is a complete reimagining of how banking can be better - my personal, joint and business accounts all coexist now and it’s far more powerful than a single credit card. Anyone who is hesitating, I can recommend them almost unreservedly. In comparison, Apple’s card really just looks like a sponsored offering from Goldman (ugh).
Also, some things make me more aware of the widening gulf between the kids and me; credit cards made out of semi-precious materials like titanium being one of them. Who gives a monkey’s, seriously? Lots of people, clearly. I like my laptops and tablets made out of tactile material that lasts and has heft; credit cards you can make them out of anything you like, I don’t care.
Lucky France. Here, if they can squeeze a dime from you, and there isn’t a law to stop them, they will. “Hey! You didn’t have to put that on credit.”
Just look at our Payday loan crisis. Attempts to reign it in are subverted by the tools in government. “Fuck the poor,” is the mostly unwritten (but understood) law of the land.
Lucky France.
This is not only for France but for the whole Eurozone, I think.
Lucky them too, then. I wish it would catch on over here.
