one of the first illustrated books in history

I assume it’s pornography (or perhaps the history of the internet has jaded me).

Hieroglyphs don’t count (3200 BC, IIRC)? Fair enough I guess. they still get the title for earliest book made entirely of emojis…

The headline is, as usual, not right. Or at least, the linked article doesn’t say it’s the earliest illustrated book, but possibly the earliest book, period. Though the form of the book is unclear (whether it is scroll-like or codex-like). But I’d guess what is meant is ‘text written on a media meant to be carried around’, as opposed to say, a wall carving or fresco.

“The headline is, as usual, not right.”

You are claiming that Boing Boing’s headlines are usually incorrect. As soon as I read this sentence, I had a strong feeling that the rest of your comment would be horseshit, too. Lo and behold, I was right!

If it’s not porn, the no one is going to care much about this find.

PS - the back room in the main museum in Naples is pretty cool.

The other ways were all invented later.

And then the Greek period changed the game entirely
