“Even in this metric age, it was still the thousand-foot telescope, not the three hundred-meter one. The great saucer set among the mountains was already half full of shadow, as the tropical sun dropped swiftly to rest, but the triangular raft of the antenna complex suspended high above its centre still blazed with light. From the ground far below, it would have taken keen eyes to notice the two human figures in the aerial maze of girders, support cables, and wave-guides.”

Arecibo had radar transmitters as well as radio telescope receivers. It was quite a versatile facility, whose functionality isn’t duplicated anywhere else. That’s why this is so sad.

Collapsed Arecibo telescope to be replaced by school

It’s so so sad to see it like that. For all my childhood and young adult years, Arecibo was a monument to exploration, science, and seeking truth. To quote Carl, it was a candle in the darkness. An incredible example of what humanity can do when we put our efforts to something positive. I dreamt of seeing it someday.

Losing it is a step backwards, at least symbolically if not exactly scientifically.
