Australia bans Japanese hentai

Hentai isn’t just Japanese porn, it’s deviate Japanese porn (yes, I realize that word is loaded with value judgment. If you get off on girls having fish shoved up their butts, I apologize). Hentai (変態) literally means “abnormal.”

I don’t know the specifics of the ban, or if this is typically blue-nosed for Australia, but if they’re banning hentai, they’re not necessarily banning all porn from Japan.

“ Australia bans Japanese hentai”

Sometimes protectionism to support your local industry is justified.

The only grounded ethical argument against porn is … the possible exploitation of people in it. Isn’t hentai the solution to that?

Isn’t that the porn industry in general?

He’s not entirely wrong; some of it does depict characters that are either underaged, or extremely child-like. But it is an overtly broad generalization of the genre, and sounds more like a ban for racist reasons than to discourage the exploitation of children.

BTW, relevant context for this ban: the current PM is a US-style Pentecostal ratbag.

Okay, but what about the literal millions of doujinshi that’s just people’s hobby art? A fuckn shitton of hentai is just enthusiastic ametures self-publishing.

Also @adamrice

Hentai means “perverted” and it’s literally just porn.

There’s two broad categories: Ecchi (lewd stuff, softcore porn. You can see things like exposed breasts and a lot of skin, lewd poses etc), and hentai which means nothing more than you can see uncensored genitals. If you can see a penis or vagina it is necessarily hentai. The term doesn’t mean anything more than that.

Child porn comes from everywhere and in all styles. He should either campaign to ban all porn, or just child porn if that’s the real problem.

Of course it is, but hentai takes it to a whole 'nother level.

This is news to me, and I live in Oz. And I have a strong suspicion that this is the work of our Glorious Dark Lord, Peter Dutton, who a few years back finagled and blackmailed himself into a role arguably more powerful than the Prime Minister, gathering intelligence and border/immigration under one hat; “Home Affairs”.

He’s been held in contempt of court, he’s responsible for our abysmal computer security laws and, for further putting the boot into refugees (and if anyone can plumb the depths of depravity, it’s Dutton).

As a side-note, his super-ministry still has no coherent emergency response plan for a Pandemic. One potential reason is he’s too busy with his pile of confiscated Japanese Hentai.

I’ve watched that and can confirm.

Welll, check off Australia from places I’d move to.

Some hentai is actually pretty hilarious. Besides, I’m not here to kink shame, I’ve got plenty myself.

Agreed. There is simply no excuse for child porn. It violates the concepts of both consent and every form of decency I hold to. I’m generally for kink in absolutely any form- but you leave kids out. There’s no way that’s acceptable. Ever.

It may help to conceptualize this problem like this: Australia might look modern and have all the bells and whistles that international first-world countries have, but we’re a minimum of 20 years behind socially. Some states are worse than others, as evidenced by the Jukkan Gorge abomination a few months back–

–and more recently the destruction of sacred trees to build a frigging road.

These are two recent and very public examples of the racism at work in this country, but it’s got a long, dark history.

Interestingly, there is a myth regarding Aboriginal people being considered “Flora and Fauna” in the Australian Constitution before the 1968 referendum. The truth is only marginally better.

Up until 1968 Aboriginal people were ignored in state populations and had no rights to vote.

section 127 of the constitution had excluded Aboriginal people from being counted for constitutional purposes; they were not included in the populations of states and territories for the purposes of allocating federal seats in Parliament.

There’s a certain irony to know Australia was the first country in the world to give women the right to vote AND to stand as a political candidate. New Zealand gave women the vote but not to be an MP.

But back to racism: there are pockets of resistance of course, and calling out racism when it occurs might change minds, but the scale of the problem is too large for individuals.

I’ve often thought that the only people qualified to lead Australian Federal and State parliaments are Indigenous peoples. But I don’t think a change like that will happen in time. Or if it does, the damage will be well-and-truly done.

OH, when I went to Vegas they passed out card like this on the streets for various things.

I am still confused how this is “originating” the comic books and anime porn, though. Of course people in the sex industry are going to use porn (whether themselves or other media) for marketing.
