Black Lives Matter. Still

Mutterings are that things aren’t pretty at TSR. Unfortunately, they NDA up the wazoo, and speaking out could tank a career.

Yep. It strikes me as very cosmetic. Again, if companies hired people of color more often and then listened to their employees, they’d often avoid embarrassing shit like this that they then have to issue public statements about. It’s not rocket surgery nor is any of this new issues.

Footage of a white woman Karen-ing the hell out of a black homeowner.

What amazes me is how every time the homeowner filming the harassment gets even close to normal communication distance with the harasser, the harasser starts backing up and saying she’s scared.

She walked into what appears to be (based on passersby) a predominantly Black neighborhood and started filming, and never stopped, despite at some points being surrounded by multiple Black neighbors all filming her. She kept threatening to call the police, but never did. Why not?

Because she wasn’t actually afraid that she would be harmed in the situation. She KNOWS that the neighbors will not react violently against her aggression, unlike how it would be if the tables were turned. And she knows that if she did call the police, they would be likely to believe HER and cause problems for the person she was harassing instead, possibly even killing her.

THAT is white privilege, in a nutshell.

Sometimes I think of all those photos of bigots screaming at little Ruby and wonder “did those people have any clue how monstrous they would look to the world at large and generations to come?”

And then I remember there are still people happy to pose for similar scenes today.

I finally got around to watching 13th yesterday and i’d urge anyone to see it who hasn’t yet but there’s a two minute sequence towards the end which floored me and really hammers the point about how little has changed between then and now.

Redfin has done a study about the continued equity disparity between formerly redlined and greenlined communities. To this day, for example, homes in ‘good’ (White) neighborhoods in Chicago are worth DOUBLE what homes in formerly redlined (Black) neighborhoods are worth, even including significant reclaiming and gentrifying in traditional Black neighborhoods like Bronzeville.

Hard to put a like to that but yeah.

By the by, i just noticed Cory linking to a bunch of stuff from the internet archive concerning the oral histories of the enslaved from the federal writer’s project along with photos, news reports etc.

Lives means all parts of lives. Mere survival isn’t living. There’s a lot we need to fix beyond the cops.

That film has been in my Netflix queue for ages but I couldn’t muster the nerve to watch it until tonight. The juxtaposition of Trump’s “Law & Order” rhetoric with historical footage of his spiritual antecedents was downright chilling.
