Ah! If so, that’s true and I agree.
Oh get outta my face CNN, with this feel good copsucking bullshit.
You got it. I was going full hyperbole.
“I have two girls myself, similar on age to the two girls that were there, so it kind of struck me a little bit,”
Translation: I saw nothing in common with these two women until I saw the girls.
I don’t see “whiteness” as innate. (And i don’t think @knoxblox does either) It is taught from a very early point in life, to where it feels like it’s natural and requires conscious effort, often a lot of it, to overcome. A whole lot of folks are not willing to put in the work when it’s main outcome is seeing others as equal rather than lesser. Unfortunately, for a distressing number of white folks, that is viewed as “giving in” or “surrendering,” rather than just recognizing what truly is. Which is sad and depressing when put that way.
Reading this made me think about all the ways (beyond “the talk”) that Black kids are taught to navigate the world away from home. If someone is harmed because they ignore those teachings, it’s usually described as a slip-up or something they forgot. The negative consequences are viewed as a reminder, because that risk always with us.
Whenever we seem to make progress toward the day when we can feel truly safe and secure out there, the pendulum swings back. The rise of 45 led to the worst backlash I’ve ever seen. The sheer number of people supporting him dashed my hopes that day will come in my lifetime.
Sad and depressing, indeed.
I don’t either, which I thought I said?
It’s kind of a weird form of propaganda anyway. We all know news doesn’t generally bother with dog-bites-man stories, they write man-bites-dog stories. So what, exactly, are you supposed to take away from a story about a cop doing a good thing making the cut?
No, just replying stream-of-consciousness as I do. Your statement sparked a thought, and I let it evolve.
That’s where the zero-sum game philosophy comes into play. It’s not about ignorance, it’s about selfishness. Any educator can tell you, you can’t educate selfishness out of people.
The exact same argument applies to international relations re: the Global South, btw.
If you’re arguing that American global dominance is a thing worth preserving, you’re arguing for the preservation of white supremacy.
Same thing, writ large. There’s a false assumption on the part of many world leaders that in order for them to have power, someone else has to be weak. It’s false in the micro and the macro.
Humankind’s greatest achievements have been through cooperation and collective effort, not through dominance or “victory.”
It’s also one of our earliest achievements.
It’s Cop-aganda. The media are another obstacle in the white supremacy barrier, using feel-good stories to divert attention from the reality of the situation - that if either of these sides did not have young girls (police fantasy = protector, defender), a conscious mental connection would not have been made to help instead of harm. And it doesn’t require any critical thought, because it’s also part of the script; a tool taught and used for distraction.
On the difference in crowd control, etc…
And to think that Americans look down on India (if they ever even think of India) for having a caste system.
