Boy, 9, creates library in his front yard. City, stupid, shuts it down

I love burrough’s voice!

From what I hear, Lawrence is one of those nice little liberal cities in a reddish state. Kind of like Asheville, NC. I think he ended up there because he liked it.

You know, given a choice, I’d go for the first picture, not the second. I kind of like that old house.

Leawood is just like these other cities that shut down kids’ lemonade stands or make their parents dismantle their tree houses.

I saw that @anon61221983 replied to this comment saying that she’d prefer the first of the two houses. The irony I’m seeing here is that the house in question is actually more like the first example of the two you’re comparing. It’s a modest, single story ranch house. However, it does exist within city limits in a fully-developed neighborhood. In other words, you’re the one misrepresenting when you provide only two extreme examples. That’s one of fallacies people love to talk about: “black-or-white” - claiming only two extreme possibilities exist when many more actually do.

This isn’t taking place in an upscale planned community. You can see the house, as well as several of the neighbors’, in the newsreel footage I posted. You only have to watch from 0:30 to 0:40 to do so.

OK, fine; I’m still trying to figure out how this has a damn thing to do with the “hurr durr hicks r dum n backwerd bible thumpers” kneejerk reaction to a story about Kansas. And it totally doesn’t sound like that’s the case, so you guys…smh. Hey, guys, there’s people who act like hicks in the suburbs, and the story’s about Kansas, a place where there’s hicks, and it’s about somebody having to get rid of a bookshelf in their yard, so obviously dumb hicks are against readin’! (Somewhere in the world, a logic textbook spontaneously combusted.) Look, everybody, I’m witty, edgy, and original! See, here’s my spork!

But, y’know, you got pedals to turn backwards and goalposts to move, so good luck with that.

I’m just wondering if they’d let him keep it if he connected it to the house - i.e. attach a pole to it that reaches up to the wall. Problem solved.

There are a ton of them in Portland and they’re usually filled with books that would be wanted by and read by nobody. I remember years ago when I first read about tiny sharing libraries I thought it was the coolest idea, but in practice… The ubiquitous curbside “free” piles are usually 99% actual trash too…

That’s certainly what you are expecting, but not really what’s happening.

We have like two of these on every block in Minneapolis and they work out great. I don’t see how this could even be a problem.

This meme has been a Public Service Announcement from the Greater Leawood Homeowners Association.

So no dog houses either. But then the law is called on you for not having a dog house.

LOL.

Hey now, this little guy might just build his own, full-sized library right in the middle of the street if this outrageous stunt is allowed to continue.

Gates and guards, a sure sign of the worst of the worst.

There’s a difference between

“Christ, what assholes”

and

“Good god. What the fuck is wrong with…Oh, it’s Kansas.”

Don’t you think? One of those required nearly zero, somewhere near Archie Bunker, thinking.

The only other thing I’m going to say is this: if this had happened in San Francisco, and it’d been the result of his techie neighbor complaining, the response on BoingBoing would be very different.

I mean…LOL, yeah, Kansas City is a redneck wasteland

Full disclosure: I only get defensive about this stuff because I come from further east, but where I live really is full of poor rednecks, but they’re not nearly as backward as y’all seem to think they are. I can’t help but notice when I’m on a website that only cares about the poors when they’re in certain geographic areas…and y’all seem to think that Flyover Country is nothing more than hicks, corn, and tornadoes.

Grammatically correct evil? Why, that’s the best kind of evil!
