The fact that the US uses polygraphs and actually believe the results is just (yet) another of those things that make Europeans scratch our heads. You might as well use astrology.
As with most systemic uses of a polygraph it seems like this is less about lie detection and more about getting people to tell on themselves under the stress of the testing. Reminds me a lot of the way that polygraphs are used in the containment model of sex offender treatment - make them go through it in hope that they will get scared and reveal something about themselves that they otherwise would not have.
