A death sentence was laid on Salman Rushdie by the ayatollah Khomeini for his book “The Satanic Verses” which (at least the copy I read) was unillustrated.
Right, because all of your posts are footnoted. Don’t be a hypocrite.
But, as for the Muslim nations trying to ban blasphemy internationally…

“They’re all.” That’s where you lost me. There are many wonderful, enlightened, kind, compassionate people, in large part due to their religion. Unfortunately, those people aren’t destructive, and aren’t hungry for power or attention, so we forget about them, and the twisted ones make the headlines.
I think he’s hinting that it’s because of the situation in most Muslim majority countries - American led wars, American backed oppressive regimes, support for the Israelis at the expense of the Palestinians, etc. He’s comparing it to the way people framed the Jewish question in the 20s and 30s, hence the spike in terrorism by Zionist going into the second world war and directly after (Stern Gang). Or that’s what I got out of it…
[edited to add] Sadly, it’s going to be a long time before we’re done yelling about Muslims, thanks in part to Fox News disinformation campaign about a billion people…
I guess the question is, who are they supposed to be Satirizing - the Minister of Justice herself or people like the NF/Marine Le Pen and their clearly racist views? What was the context of that second image, in other words?

Well, that and the whole terrorism thing…
… And nations that lash and jail or kill people for blasphemy…or apostasy… or…
Do you really not care that the majority of victims of Islamist terror groups are other Muslims? Or that other muslims are the majority of the causalities in these American led wars? We’re killing children with flying robots.

There are people in the Muslim world who want to ban blasphemy internationally. There are also people in the Muslim world who are adamant supporters of free speech and who have spent the last several days actively speaking out in support of Charlie Hebdo, like the publishers of the following Arabic-language newspapers around the world.
But hey, let’s just lump them all under the “Muslims who will threaten to kill you if you satirize their religion or culture” category.
And yet lumping and assuming about me is what you are doing. My own beliefs are more complicated than can be summed up in a few quick posts. You do what you claim others do.
Why, it’s almost like Muslims are real live human beings, some of who are assholes, some who are good people! But they couldn’t POSSIBLE be true, cause they’re our new existential enemy, right, like the Commies before them, and the Jews and Africans before them, and the protestant and/or Catholics before them, etc and so on into infinitiy… /s
If your beliefs are so complicated, why not express that. All we seem to be getting here is a face full of hatred toward an entire group of people. I promise, you can use words to be more nuanced. Try it, it’s fun and you get to have conversations that aren’t full of snark.
You are projecting, I’d say. There is no such sentiment in my posts.
Let’s hear a round of applause for xenophobia!
The cartoons aren’t clever, funny or ‘satirical’. Just cheap, nasty*, kick em’ while they’re down* bullying. Bullying that fits like a velvet glove with Europe’s increasing xenophobia, racism and rise in right wing extremism. If shitting on the little guy is great satire/comedy, then go laugh your ass off at some dude doing stand up about beating his wife, but. not. really. joking.
Normally I would never devote a post here to a lenghty quote. But I can’t imagine anyone expressing my thoughts better than Ross Douthat did in the NYT:
If a large enough group of someones is willing to kill you for saying
something, then it’s something that almost certainly needs to be said,
because otherwise the violent have veto power over liberal civilization,
and when that scenario obtains it isn’t really a liberal civilization
any more.
Again, liberalism doesn’t depend on everyone offending
everyone else all the time, and it’s okay to prefer a society where
offense for its own sake is limited rather than pervasive. But when
offenses are policed by murder, that’s when we need more of them, not
less, because the murderers cannot be allowed for a single moment to
think that their strategy can succeed.
Let me repeat: “the murderers cannot be allowed for a single moment to think that their strategy can succeed”.

“liberal society” sure is killing and generally creating hardship for a shitload of INNOCENT people belonging to that “group” all the world round…
There are plenty of examples of publications that just “shit on the little guy” but this magazine took more shots at the Catholic Church than at Islam and France is just over 50% Catholic (or was as of a 2007 census).
I don’t have the language skills or knowledge of French politics to be a very good judge of the quality of this satire, but there’s plenty of evidence that they weren’t just singling out Islam as an easy target. Some of the most controversial covers were also more anti-extremist than anti-Islam, like the one depicting ISIS preparing to behead the Prophet or the one where the Prophet was weeping that “it’s so hard to be loved by dicks.”
Yeah, they remind me of an idiot like Bill Maher who goes “See, see! ALL religions are bad!” and then goes on to talk about how Muslims inherently have something wrong with them. Much in the same way that so many Americans would say that poor blacks sometimes riot because they’re inherently violent, not because they’ve been abused to the point of it…
p.s. Even if France is half “Catholic” that hardly means they’re very religious, and being Europe/France I kinda doubt it. In the end I don’t think it really applies anyway…
So Team America and The Interview were not satires?
