Cataloging the far right elements of the Yellow Vest movement

Worse, those vests were meant to be for breakdowns. Now if you see someone in a yellow vest on the side of the road, you no longer automatically think that the person needs assistance.

Most of the Irish crowd seem to be protesting immigration and refugees and the existence of non-white people.

I think the idea of the compulsory hi-vis vests is more to avoid people being flattened while changing a left-side tire on a dark country road. But yes, the added meaning probably undermines that intention.

The 30-40 yellow vests facing a larger group of counterprotestors (long established anti fascists, anarchists, and republicans) have largely ceased to exist when the few ordinary people among them realised it was an opportunistic scam from shameless racists. It was never popular nor populist and was always a media phenomenon here. It shouldn’t be mentioned in the same article as the French.

We already had our populist, popular, anti corruption movement (Right to Water) which started up during attempts to privatise water supply during the long recession. Like in France this was seen by the people as symbolic of the elite contempt for them. Unlike in France it was solidly left, republican, and anarchist. The rallies and protests were attended by popular left wing politicians and led to a major swing left in the Dail (Parliament). There is a centre right alliance in power. The two main antagonistic parties had to unite to keep the left from being the major player in a coalition.

There are currently no representatives of any anti immigrant movement in Parliament. There may be soon because the media make it into a story even when it isn’t. All across the world.

Repeated for truth. But Cory is heavily invested in the idea of the Irish Light-brownshirts as the revolutionary descendants of the Occupy movement.

You can still deploy the Warndreieck.
If all fails, set the spare tyre on fire.
Anyway, all my hi-vis vests are orange.

Which is odd because the remnants of Occupy are relentless in calling them out. And outnumbering them at their own protests. Hilariously the light brown shirts were allowed block a road by the Gardai, but the Occupy people wouldn’t let them do it!

Relevant, I think. Though Doctorow does not seem interested in first-hand accounts which have not been approved by the filter of “Naked Capitalism”.
