Checking on progress at Guédelon Castle, a Medieva-style castle being built from scratch in France

Definitely on my bucket list if I ever get to France.

For me, the really nice part of Guédelon was the backstory. There was a building there before. The precise date was supposed the year the local lord was granted ‘permission to crenelate’ - the right to upgrade his house to a defensible castle. This was an honour and a sign of trust, but the lord could not just pull down his house and start on a bare site. So bits of the house were dismantled, and re-built with a view to having something castle-like in twenty or thirty years, while still serving as a house at all times. The work force had to be acquired and trained. This is a very different sort of project to (say) the castles of King Edward I in Wales, which had to be built in hostile territory, and so had to become defensible a lot quicker.
