K9787 was the very first production Spitfire and first flew on 14/5/38. Later converted to a PR Mk III.
Failed to return from a photo-recce sortie to Cherbourg and Le Havre.
Crew: P/O (44672) Samuel BOWES (pilot) RAF - killed.
Samuel Bowes is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

As an aside, I’d like to point out that we’re probably roughly 3 months out from the end of this 8 year diversion at the current pace, but that it’s likely to accelerate through the end.
For regular posters to the thread, (I was for a brief time in the mid 7000’s, but haven’t been in quite a while), do you think it would be fitting if the first post for 10,000 were reserved for the OP, @fiddlingfrog, if they want it? It would seem a fitting end.
