I hope it was quick.

Very likely so quick that they didn’t know anything was happening until they were already dead. As others have said elsewhere, the implosion would have been supersonic.

Yeah, I’ve read that in several places.

oof.

Has there been an explanation for the banging?

I suspect the ocean has a lot of things in it that make noises people don’t pay much attention to until they conduct a search like this.

That was exactly the explanation given by the US Coast Guard at one point.

When I first heard the sub was missing I didn’t have much hope. The ocean is vast. Finding someone on a life raft is a crap shoot, let alone someone under the water in a tiny sub.

My only morbidly curious thought (that I don’t really want to think about) is was it quick? Or did they lose power and suffer in that tiny tub for a day or two before it imploded?

It was Orcas wasn’t it?

Too soon?

Orcas aren’t big enough idiots to dive that deep. I do admire the engineering though. It did do it successfully a number of times before I think.

“These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans,” said Andrew Von Kerens on behalf of OceanGate. “Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time.”

OceanGate thanked the multiple organizations of the international community for their commitment to finding these five explorers.

“This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community, and for each of the family members of those lost at sea,” the statement said.

The loss of life is sad. But please. These were not “true explorers.” They were tourists.

“Mission Specialists”

I guess their “specialties” are having more dollars than sense.

I’m guessing the likely cause was that the sub collided with the Titanic wreckage resulting enough structural damage to cause the thing to collapse. Quite likely due to lack of training despite the “simple / intuitive” controls.

Apparently the son of the father-son duo who were on board didn’t really want to go. His father wanted them to both do it, and the son agreed as a father’s day present. At least it’s unlikely any of them suffered. Ugh. Nightmare fuel, this story.

Did you hear about the 600 migrants that drowned when their boat sank near Greece? Me neither. Man, I hate corporate news.

That question was asked, the head guy said the debris was 1600 feet from the bow of the Titanic.

Yes I know of sources that did cover the sinking, but the every day morning news on TV was oblivious to it.

NBC even has a story about the Titan story overshadowing that one. I agree it’s a more tragic story, but the media is capable, and actually is, covering both stories. Sunken boat killing hundreds overshadowed by Titan submersible coverage
