I’ve never bothered to look it up but I occasionally wonder what wig powder was made from. Talc, I assume. In the Marquis de Sade’s novel Justine there’s an incredibly cheap couple who save money by having Justine scrape plaster from the walls and using it to powder their wigs.

I can’t imagine talc would be that expensive but they were pathologically cheap.
