I use Blockada on my phone. It blocks ads in apps. If an app doesn’t work at all when Blockada is running then it gets uninstalled.
It’s really great for blocking all the vile horseshit that the Imgur app throws out. Makes Imgur useable again. It’s also really nice that I can block all facebook associated domains at the network stack and not have to worry much about direct tracking.
If you are not ensuring a constant revenue stream, you are not the customers app publishers want to have. Why would they serve the people who bring in less money when they can concentrate on the cash cows?
