It does occur to me that the low hanging fruit - dissociative viewers with a tenuous grasp on reality - might find themselves snagged by this kind of a premise. If the hooked fish is a child, then there’s a long game to be played before they’re capable of causing enough trouble to be profitable. If a chronological adult, then no telling what further kind of malware could be used to deliver a payload.
The paranoid psychotronic interpretation of this stuff, makes the church of the subgenius seem downright wholesome by comparison!
