Explainer: how anaedotal evidence about alternative medicine can lead you astray

that one word, is science.

“Reality doesn’t care what you believe” is my version of that.

I used to think like you until I had a few experiences with Western
medicine. As for science

And another

I’m not a fan of that Neil deGrasse Tyson meme graphic, because it is the exact same thing that the faithful claim of their religions, that “The good thing about [insert name of religion] is that it’s true whether you believe in it or not.” So, it’s a generic claim that anyone can throw out there about anything. It isn’t a free standing claim that can’t be turned around and used to mean the exact opposite (science is true, or faith is true).

(Also, the graphic has a typo.)

So, just saying “science” isn’t sufficient either - even though I’m a big fan of science.

Already addressed by @Wanderfound who posted Ben Goldacre’s book. Science can be imperfect and still be the best thing we have. And, how do we know if a study is flawed? Oh, right science - without science you have no way to evaluate whether a study is on point or flawed. So without the science you disdain, you have no way to actually condemn science. It’s a recursive problem for you.

You are also under the mistaken impression that if you denigrate “Western Medicine” that your preferred alt medicine must be true, yet that is not the case.

I’ve had many experiences with W̶ͮ̎̇E̐̿̉Šͭ̑̍̍̂͏T̔͋̄͊̄ͥ̓Ė͋̐ͧ̋ͦR̋̿̅̃ͧͣ͘N̊ ̽ͫ͌̏̀̌͜M̛̿́͒ͥ̇E͆̓̎͞D̔̂I͗ͯCͫ͑͑̀I̸ͭN̎̏͊͘É. And you know what? I’d be dead without it. Because I’ve had life threatening infections that were easily solved with antibiotics, I’ve had a broken bone that’s healed properly due to your terrifying ͡W̭̠̬͙̮̙̱E͕̜͓̜S͏͉̯̘̙͕̪̗T̪E̵͇̪̯͓̜̲R̠͖̠̰Ṇ̤͇̥͎̀ ͖̳̺M̧̠̰͓̙E̙̠͈̭̻͚͕Ḓ͖ͅI̘̫̞͖͞C̹̼̠̣̲ͅIN͓Ḙ̴̜̪̼͓͈͔. Finally, did you even read @Wanderfound’s post? We’re working on making pharma more accountable every year, and with methods like registered trials, stacking the deck isn’t going to be happening anymore.

Notice how science will change when faced with a problem, and takes new evidence into account.

Whereas alt-med makes up bullshit, and sticks with it forever, even when proven thoroughly and completely wrong for hundreds of years. Like homeopath, for example.

That is a nonspecific anecdote.

And that’s an emotional appeal pointing directly at a bias, supported only by a tautology, rooted in personal experience.

I hope you feel better, and get over this nasty case of fallacius maximus you are coming down with.

an argument “as thin as the homeopathic soup that was made by boiling the shadow of a pigeon that had starved to death.” --Abraham Lincoln (and not even made up, he was referring to Douglas)

Homeopathy is as timeless as racism, just as well founded in fact, and exactly as useful.

You don’t have to be a fan of the truth, you just have to come around to it eventually. Or accept the consequences of self deception. Plenty of folks do.

I was born seriously premature, and was an unhealthy kid. I was six years old before my parents had any confidence in my surviving to adulthood.

If I had been born as little as twenty years earlier, I’d have been dead a dozen times over before I reached my tenth birthday.

Would have died a couple of years ago if it wasn’t for modern hospital care, too.

I do not reject science. I reject the meme graphic because it uses the same phrasing that the faithful do but not to any effect that actually makes them think differently. Instead you only get two sides repeating the exact same thing but believing it supports their side, with them saying “no, our beliefs are true whether you believe them or not” and you saying “no, our beliefs are true whether believe them or not.” On that basis, I don’t think the meme graphic is an effective of rhetorical device.

I am working on it.

“Maca extract, a narrow (infact very narrow) intervention study with many don’t asks”

Soon on pub(is)med!
