Floods, Fires, and Heat Domes (the climate change thread) (Part 1)

There’s a new UN Emissions Gap Report, covering the difference between what we said we’re going to do and should be doing and are doing. This is getting some news time today. And for once, I approve of the language and framing used by NPR in their between-show news bites.

Of course it’s bad news. Quoting Vasquez in Aliens: “Whatever you’re gonna do, do it now.”

Realistically, we passed the tipping point some years ago. At this point it is just minimizing damage and adapting to inevitable changes. We won’t do that until it is too late also. Stupid fucking timeline.

We’ve had our fun for the morning, so here’s something dead serious from the Financial Times to drag you back into reality:

That makes me want to ask Mr. Drum, over-generalize much?

Doomism is giving oneself permission to give up, stop caring, stop feeling, just let it all wash over you. There’s still a lot we can do and there’s a huge difference between just letting it all go to hell and actually taking the actions available to us. It’s like with a heart attack, where time is muscle … some is lost, much can be saved.

No fate but what we make.

“ Gov. Tom Wolf has committed the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26% by 2025 and by 80% by 2050, compared to 2005 levels.”

No noticeable change in anyone’s day to day life. Besides the expected health improvements going forward.

But that just a model, don’t you know? We need to see Florida and DC (and Bangladesh) under water to be sure. That’s when we can know it’s not just eggheads trying to make a buck! (/s)

That is some Bladerunner 2049 stuff right there. Even Spokane didn’t look that orange back in 2016 when we had super bad wildfires basically everywhere in Washington state and BC.
