"Generation Gap": Which Era Do YOU Fall Into?

Like Melz said. Disagreement is one thing. I not only accept it, I welcome it.

What I am seeing a lot of ion a very short time is a gang mentality of dehumanizing and seething anger towards conflicting views. Large egos with a seemingly militant superiority complex and unwelcoming of ever being questioned. There is a titanic difference between that and constructive dialogue about disagreement.

Is this site really just a collective of people with the same extreme and narrow outlook?

Ask yourself this, though: are YOU being constructive?

I’m seeing a lot of dehumanizing from you in referring to us as some collective entity. I don’t see a lot of seething anger, though some people care a lot about some things and aren’t shy about calling BS.

Well we do collectively hang out here because we like weird things, there’s a mix re: left/right but more on the left, there’s differences of opinion re: guns, feminism, and a number of other topics. But, yes, we’re all in pure unison, you can swap usernames/icons and see just the same views, styles of communication, and experiences reflected since we are all Borg now that BoingBoing has assimilated us. Prepare to look at the banana, just look at it.

Thanks for the reply. Explains a lot if true. Not sure if it’s more sad or terrifying.

I don’t know, have you been here long enough to find out? You showed up out of the blue and immediately started commenting on some topics which are already more than a tad bit controversial, normally when this happens on the BBS it’s someone coming in just to trolley, not that that is what you have been doing. But you need to realize that you haven’t even been a participant of this community for more than a few days, so if you want us to treat you with respect you need to treat the community with respect, especially when you have just joined it.

I personally welcome disagreement, I think having someone disagree with me gives me either the ability to improve my argument or even change my mind, however disagreement should be respectful. Everyone has their off days, I would advise you to not forget that and be both more forgiving of others and more conscious of your own comments.

Thanks for the advice, but I’m already aware of the ability to PM.

Again, I can’t speak for anyone else, but personally I’m not trying to ā€œrun anyone downā€, and therefore, anything I have to say can be posted publicly.

We’re just making comparisons/contrasts from our previous experiences with other sites, and their members.

Thus far, I still prefer BBS over the shitholes like the previous sites I’ve known; because thus far, this one seems like the mods might actually care about doing their jobs in a timely matter.

(And what a change that is.)

However the apparent tendency to ā€˜clique up’ seems to be present here as well, and that’s unfortunate, as it can be off-putting.

@PFKA_GLSPX:

To be fair, it’s honestly too soon to tell.

I see some serious promise here.

And thankfully no ā€œAm I Pretty?ā€ questions.

ETA:

I like you

*lolz

I had to, but so far the feeling is quite mutual…

collective-hive mind
So y’all are just the Borg or just daleks?

Collective hive mind is pretty creepy concept.

Just speaking in general extremes are usually not such a good thing.

If you want technology discussion with a more libertarian social bent, then I’d suggest Hacker News.

I like it here, but then again, I’m a marxist. lol.

Okay, I read most of that thread (197/200+). People were discussing very real ramifications of not vaccinating children. It seemed to me that your friend was…purposely arguing the negative even though he/she admitted that he/she wasnt personally against vaccinations and is vaccinated him/herself?

It looked to me that @PFKA_GLSPX was arguing a political principle rather than disputing the science. And people kind of called him/her on his/hershit.

I actually like BoingBoing threads, and I often read threads in which many posters disagree with one another in a spirited fashion (gun control). However, readers of this site have less tolerance for bullshit and driving trollies. Whether your friend was here for sincere reasons, it seemed to me that he/she had a different agenda.

And how does one do that exactly? Where was I being disrespectful before being shown a whole lot of ugliness? Even after being handed an unwelcoming bundle of ugliness I refrained from insults or personal attacks.

I sincerely apologize to the site and community if I came of as a troll or someone trying to breed malicious discord. I assure it’s not the case.[quote=ā€œTailOfTruth, post:151, topic:75475ā€]

This is very refreshing to here.

See, again, not cool.

Some even hang at HN and here. The Lisp/startup/Paul Graham Fanatacism/programmer fad/Google-worship over there is nice to temper by looking at bananas over here, really. My hedgehog made it to the front page over there:

and here:

so you know they’re both cool.

Some of my favourite @beschizza jokes are his HN jokes. The best jokes spring from intimacy, not from distance.

Sorry to interrupt, but I have to ask;

Do you think that calling someone stupid is in anyway respectful?

Or maybe a useful moron?

Because from my personal POV everyone I’d interacted with was quite reasonable and civil…

Right up until I made this post, completely unaware that I was hitting a ā€œsore spotā€ for members on this site.

Then the passive-aggressive claws came out.

Not from everyone, mind you; but enough so to make me start to rethink inviting other folks I know who enjoy internet discourse.
