i grew up on and have lived a large portion of my life on a farm where large-scale gardening was common. on two separate occasions my father and i grew 4-5 acre corn crops to use to feed out hogs for sale and slaughter. we have also raised multiple acre plots of crops like field peas, tomatoes, and potatoes. additionally we had a 1000 tree peach orchard we tended for 8 years at peak as well as a further 10 years over the course of its inevitable decline. not necessarily easy work but very satisfying.

How confident are you that you could extract a 25% better yield than your father from an acre of corn?

If it’s 25% more today than he did then, you’d be hard pressed not to. The vield increases due to better seed stock alone will provide you more than that. Add the improvements in farming practice, and yields are multiples of what they once were. Take a look at the first chart if this site to see what I mean. If ‘dad’ grew an acre of corn in 1960, he would have gotten 40 bu/ac. Today you would be expected to get 160 bu/ac.

If it’s same day comparison, then it’s a fair question. I’d argue it’s impossible these days to get 25% improved yield as there’s not much slack left in the system.
