It doesn’t help while it does contain petroleum and asphalt which could poison animals like, you know, dogs. Also a healthy well kept tree does not die because some bark got damaged. It’ll heal normally.

Knowing the neighborhood there would have been plenty of nosy people with enough time to discover his identity and rat him out.
