GOP wants to grab student loan payments right out of your paycheck

At least she has a degree from Stanford. A lot of students go deep in debt to some third-tier college or some scammy outfit like Corinthian Colleges. Then they have poor job prospects and a big loan bill.

On one hand, it actually does seem like it would be an unfair burden to businesses. I mean, I’ve worked for some very small businesses, where I could directly see that the owner didn’t need one more thing to take care of.

On the other hand, “Free short-term loan to business owners”, right?

No. Most Dems in the US are neoliberals. Meaning they support neoliberal economic policies, and broadly liberal social policies. Conservatives often, but not always, also support pretty similar economic policies, but are social conservatives as well.

Counterpoint(?): Below is an email we received today from our state Superintendent of Public Education, who is Republican. I agree strongly with the things he says in the email, but I strongly suspect this is the compassionate conservative face of something heinous still to come.

Parents and caregivers,
As you know, your child is unique. Just as all students have different strengths and likes, all students’ pathways to success will be different.
For too long, many education leaders made students feel that the only way to success was to earn a four-year degree. Teachers, other educators, and employers know this is not true. Together with parents, we need to work to change this incorrect narrative.
Students can find successful careers right after high school, join the armed forces or other public service, attend community college, or – if it is what is right for them – seek four-year degrees. Each one of these choices is a pathway to success.
Please visit o find out about high-demand career pathways in North Carolina that your son or daughter can take to success.
For young students, let’s keep them on track learning their fundamental skills. For students in middle and high school, let’s start having conversations about the many great opportunities in fulfilling and fruitful careers that exist in North Carolina, such as web developers, electric lineworkers, dental hygienists, and first responders. Not all great careers require a four-year degree.
Thank you for helping us encourage every student to find their right path, work hard, and reach their American Dream!

Sorry, how is this not feudalism? The lord gets his cut.

You’d think conservatives would resist the expansion of government power required to compel private businesses to perform this debt collection function. I suppose those principles of preventing tyranny or whatever take a back seat when you can get your name on a bill.

Thanks in no small part to democrat Joe Biden - who was fucking stoked recently to let us know he has “no empathy” for the youth of today - the debts that Alexander wants to have employers redirect are debts that persist through bankruptcy. Inescapable, six figure debt. Ask yourself, which policy is more ghoulish?

Getting to the point where anything that can throw the student debt treadmill into starker relief might be a good thing. Take solace in the fundamental truth of our educational lending scheme vis a vis costs - debts that cannot be repaid will not be repaid.

Not to worry. I’m sure we’ll include a section authorizing the debtor to simply be held liable and double-billed in such cases. I’m sure it can be derived from an originalist interpretation of personal responsibility or something.

Well, um, it was harder to lay off serfs in order to align manorial synergies? And feudal authorities tended to be relatively hostile to bureaucratic centralization until fairly late in the game when absolute monarchies substantially succeeded in defanging them?

Wait, those weren’t the types of difference you were looking for, were they…

This stuff always reminds me of the dystopia in K. W. Jeter’s Noir where one can be technically dead but the powers that be have ways to make sure you are still physically paying off your debts.

Or they don’t care and just want to punish people for trying to better their lot in life?

This article is missing a tag…

Well, the Democratic party in the US is conservative (relative to both its previous state and the political parties of every other developed nation). But we’re specifically talking about neoliberal economic policy, which is most definitely conservative economic policy (that’s also been broadly accepted by Democratic party as well, but…)

This is the way it works in England, but it’s limited in other ways that make it vaguely sensible. Student loan repayments are effectively taken as additional income tax- 9% of income above a fixed threshold.

They are taken from every paycheque, but the threshold applies on a per-paycheque not annual basis. So if you work variable hours, and have a week where you don’t get enough hours to meet the threshold, you don’t pay anything that week. Employers also have no contact with the student loan company, and have no idea how much the employee owes- their role is simply to calculate the repayment value (which depends only on when the employee was at university and how much they were paid this pay period) and send it to the Revenue.

There is the annoying flaw that people end up lending the government money involuntarily- they only check once a year if you have paid off your loan. So even once the balance is zero you will keep making payments (which will be refunded at the end of the year) until they check again.

We may get the curious situation that the only qualified people interested in working in USA are those from “socialist” countries who got their free education, while Americans are forced to go abroad where they can ignore their student debt, effectively getting a free education as well.

Can they refinance at a lower rate, like put it on a mortgage?

They’re neoliberal too, pretty often. The “liberal” means economic liberal, i.e. free trade. Mitt Romney is a neolib and so is Hillary Clinton. Social policy is unconnected. It’s not a pair with “neoconservative.”
