This is the same mechanism for lots of cellular timing functions including synaptic facilitation (short term plasticity that lets a neuron emit a stronger signal when spikes come closer together in time). Passive calcium diffusion in a cell is minimal, so all the calcium is be actively pumped out of the cell (or into internal stores). This lets a cell regulate its time course by adding or removing pumps. Its a mechanism for short-term cellular timing that goes back billions of years.
