This joke does not apply to anything that is a “rate”. A shootings per 100,000 people is not just a population map (unless the number of shootings happens to increase with population squared)
But the US doesn’t have a violence problem, it’s pretty much as violent as everywhere else and people in the US often feel safer here than other countries citizens feel. You want there to be a violence problem because it suits what you are saying, but there simply isn’t. We have a lot of murders compared to other countries, but a relatively average amount of violent crime.
Also Bowling for Columbine wasn’t particularly good and hasn’t aged well.
[[[Googolplex fucking facepalm]]]
The US has an absurdly high homicide rate, not an absurdly high violent crime rate.
Though that sort of points to guns being the problem. Guns are good at taking a violent situation and turning it into a deadly one.
Pssst. Your white privilege is showing.

You might just have bad taste.
Sorta like saying, “I have a bunch of guns and I’m not dangerous, so why’s everybody want to ban guns?”
Probably, but I don’t think the one claiming guns are not the problem should be the one judging it considering that firearm availability is the excuse used to militarize the police.
They’re called crime statistics. Burglary, assault, rape, murder, etc. are all violent crimes, and the US is only unique in its homicide rate - and even then in its firearm homicide rate. Even in crime rate the US is only slightly elevated compared to Europe. It’s even a favorite talking point of pro-gun lobbyists, pointing out that the United States isn’t that violent even with a truckload of guns (even outside regional exceptions) but they don’t like when you show something like this:
Or I might just not like Michael Moore’s style of filmmaking that has led to a new generation of manipulative and sloppy video exposés.
I was unaware that the Acadamy Awards were peer reviewed.
It’s not labeled, but from the numbers, I’m pretty sure that map is numbers, not rate.
