I think maybe Mark doesn’t know who Rufo is, and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t read the comments. I think this was just an instinctive gut reaction to a person in power seeming to be credibly accused of plagiarism, which isn’t exactly an uncommon thing, and he didn’t dig any deeper. This isn’t an investigative journalism site, after all. The post is still bullshit, though, and it bugs me that it’s still up and hasn’t had any additional information added to it. Which is why I’m convinced Mark doesn’t read the comments.
ETA: Cory Doctorow, by the way, was guilty of this sort of thing a few times himself. I love his writing, but he wasn’t always right about the things he posted, either.
