@hecep's Modusoperandi thread

Guess you’ll have to ask hi-- Oh, wait…

I dunno. Maybe @othermichael was raised to fight injustice in every form and decided now was the time to fight like it was Little Brother. It’s the principle of the thing. Not the first time users were banned for derailing, and not the last unless people with ban hammers change to requiring multiple keys to ban.

Social glue? Part of the weirdness and fabric that forms a community? Everyone has a shtick, or is one. Some are more part of the place than others, but everyone has one.

Then we can see scenes like this playing out:

Seems like a win-win.

I need to go watch that again; damn fine movie.

Thank you, fellow Lipizzaner Stallion.

Personally, I feel that a bans jury would be better - a special user group that can see trial threads. User misbehaves in a thread, their posts get split off into a thread only the jury can see and decide on.

That’s sort of what he does.

You could even say that was his shtick.

Figure that out, and you’ve figured us out.

You think of it in terms of “this shtick joke account.” We think in terms of “this human being who likes making us laugh, who is uncommonly skilled at sticking sharp pins into hypocritical and narcissistic public figures. This guy whose posts we enjoy, whose takes on the political scandal of the moment we look forward to. This gem of a wit that has been taken from us.” Soft, squishy, unreasonable and illogical stuff like that.

And a guy who is hurt and offended by this loss is booted for a decade.

A decade.

I’m not entirely sure that it was a case of Michael caring so much about Modus, or if it was Michael caring why it happened to Modus… He saw Modus get a time out for what was reported by the time out giver as a joke that fell flat* - Michael opened a thread where he asked if users can get banned for a bad joke, then why hasn’t he been banned because he makes bad jokes on a frequent basis. The angry orange thing said that since Michael was asking for a ban, he would get a ban.

#MIKE** IS ALL ABOUT THE RULES

*I imagine that calling the post-grabbing angry orange thing “A Pooper of Parties” is what ultimately triggered the timeout for Modus.

**I will be in so much trouble 10 years from now

It was sarcasm.

I’ve sucked up a month ban from here from what was in my pov , silliness.
Having an apposing view on some threads here can be an issue also.

Gods… this site was run much better run years ago.

MO was being sarcastic and on point, just not the point the author was going for.

Having an opposing view here is generally fine here, as far as being able to share it and get feedback, maybe learn a little, maybe get talked down to a little, many get a ton of validation.

Having an oppositional view, which is to say, actively seeking to escalate through reflexive disagreement and invaldation, repetition of inflexible and innacurate assertions, or unkind statements of intent… that isn’t conversation, and that could go worse for people here.

But daring someone to knock a chip off your shoulder sometimes means the chip gets knocked off your shoulder. I don’t pursue fights I can’t afford to lose, and each of the people who are banned now were either pursuing an argument with a host who asked them to stop, or dared a host to throw them out. Nobody likes to be used as someone else’s grandstand, even if they should be big enough to walk away, it’s really not reasonable to expect, equally, that a host should walk away in his own venue, from a conversation on a post that he/she would like to curate.

I definitely have opinions on this, but most of them are going to be kept to myself. Not out of concern of punishment, not at all that. Not because they’d be real unpopular either. It’s because it all makes me a bit sad. I’m just as upset with OM and Japh as I am at how unreasonably their own individual unreasonable behavior was responded to. I get the 10 year ban. I don’t like it but I get it. I’ve had to do that to people I’d really like to be friends with IRL, because, to use a term I learned here, they took a shit in the punchbowl.

So here’s the thing. Don’t put our hosts in the position to respond regularly to unreasonable expectations. They are not our parents, minders, therapists, hall monitors, or leaders. They’re a handful of other people, doing something fucking awesome, for us, for free.

A chart showed up on Reddit the other day that demonstrated that the earlier a person comments in a thread, the more likely it will be upvoted.

@modusoperandi is a clever person, no doubt about that, but he was also usually the first person to comment on any given thread as well. I know boingboingbbs isn’t reddit, but I imagine his awesome like to post ratio might have something to do with this phenomenon.

And that’s the points I’ve tried to make for years.
From running an unlisted C64 bbs back in the 80’s, Admin’ing one of the largest bit torrent forums ever to here and all point’s in between.

You are a guest. Don’t walk into your hosts house and take a dump on their carpet.

You are part of a “community” on a website at the site owner/operators whim and sometimes it seems like people forget that.

His goofy one note account often says more about the farcical nature of modern world than most of us worrying and complaining about Trump or whatever. He always makes me laugh and we enjoy his posts, mainly because they punch up instead of down.

And as @ChuckV and others noted, it’s more about @othermichael’s insane 10 year ban than @modusoperandi’s shorter ban.

Ya know, when @modusoperandi comes back, he’s going to have to have a really good one liner…

THIS!. And as stated earlier if the time out for @modusoperandi was stated like “hey not in my threads please” we would not be so upset with it.

jlw has said that he wasn’t the one who banned MO, because if he were, the ban would have been for a much longer period of time.

It’s strange that authors in a blog that decry disproportionate punishments and police brutality would disproportionately punish members of the community they rely on for ad impressions. Wot kind of logic makes a person authoritarians but go full authoritarian when somebody makes a joke in a thread or when somebody asks “Que cosa?”
