I havent heard that Coltrane recording, but your description reminds me of Wayne Shorter’s later work (e.g. the quartet from 2000? onward). I suspect it’s not nearly so far-out as Live in Japan but I’ll be following along (or, trying) then look at the title & think, “wait, that’s ‘Orbits’?”
